Great news for Ireland Inc
– Intel Jobs Boost That’s what we got on Tuesday
March 23rd, 2021 when Intel announced a further 1,600 permanent jobs
for their ever-expanding manufacturing plant in Leixlip, Co Kildare. The jobs
will come online over the next 5 years and will create 5,000 construction jobs
to build the plant. The investment will bring to $15
billion the total investment to date that Intel has invested in Ireland and will more than double Intel’s manufacturing space in Ireland
and Europe. On Intel’s website, General
Manager of Intel Ireland, Eamonn Sinnott said that Intel plans to make its Leixlip
plant one of the “largest and most advanced semiconductor
manufacturing operations in Europe”, it's a real boost for Ireland, Kildare, and the local
community. The Taoiseach, Micheál Martin said the company has made an
enormous contribution to Ireland since it arrived in 1989, “Intel’s journey in Ireland has been an
extraordinary one and these plans for the next phase of its development will
enhance its reputation as a global leader in semiconductor innovation and
manufacturing. He added “Already a substantial employer in Ireland, with over 5,000
employees, these further new jobs will be most welcome”. He was not alone in his praise for Intel, Martin Shanahan,
CEO of IDA Ireland describes the news as “exciting, ambitious and innovative”
and said the expansion represents a significant investment that will continue
to position the Irish site at the centre of Intel’s European operations. Ireland is a small nation by international standards, only 1%
of the overall population of the European Union. We were the only nation in the
EU to grow exports in 2020 despite the Covid crisis, that’s very impressive. It’s a great vote of confidence in Ireland, Ireland Inc is
very much open for business.
